Google photos duplicates finder3/10/2024 Or the same shot scanned differently? Or the same scan that has had its share of generation loss when it has travelled through many systems with different metadata and Facebook etc mangling it in the process. There are very many similar shots around and the first thing to check is if the shot is actually the same. I ask this because I maintain a collection of historical photos (and movies) dating back to 1800. I can tell from the curated selection of the presumably "best" photos shown in the "Days", that my artistic taste is very different from Photos's taste. I would not leave this decision to Photos's artificial intelligence. And as the duplicate detection in Photos 5 and 6 is searching for similar photos, not just exact duplicates, I would prefer to pick the photo with the best composition as the keeper, the photo that looks best to me. It may be different versions, edited in different ways, even, if they are sharing the same original, or the metadata may be different and I would need to merge the titles, descriptions, keywords, compare the dates or locations. If there are two copies of the same photo, I prefer to pick the keeper manually. What I would never use, however, is an automatic duplicate removal. We can create this view ourselves with a smart album, if we want: About the Duplicate Detection in Photos 5 - Apple Community What is missing, is a view where we can see the duplicates side-by-side to use the result of the duplicate detection to compare and remove duplicates. I have seen this message continually in my library after the Catalina upgrade: Photos is using this information to weed out duplicates and redundant photos when displaying the curated selection of our best photos in the "Days". Below the "Days" view we can see frequently the message "Detecting Duplicates". Photos 5 on Catalina and Photos 6 on Big Sur are continually searching for duplicates and even similar photos in the library. When we sync our photo libraries from several devices with iCloud Photos, the duplicate iCloud uploads will be detected and only stored once in iCloud. When we import photos, we get a warning, if we try o import the same photo twice, so there should not be any duplicates in the library, if we pay attention to the warning about duplicates.Photos has a built-in duplicate detection. I hate having to use Google to sort and filter my photos - and remove duplicates - when Apple should be doing this. This is really important for the future of Apple Photos. Apple, please catch up to Google in this key feature and other important features, like AI detection of photo content.
